EEOC Alleges Silver Diner Harassed, Retaliated Against Waitress

A waitress at a Silver Diner in Lexington, North Carolina was sexually harassed by her supervisors–one of the restaurant’s owners–and then retaliated against when she complained to the head waitress and the other owners, according to a lawsuit filed this week by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The agency brought suit on behalf of Laura Jones, charging that the harassment included, among other things, comments about her physical appearance including comments that she was “sexy,” rubbing up against Jones while she was at work and telling Jones to get rid of her boyfriend if she wanted to advance in her job.  The suit further charged that on one occasion, the co-owner forcefully grabbed Jones by the arm and tried to intimidate her into getting rid of her boyfriend.

That was bad enough. But after she complained, the owners reduced her hours and fired her after she complained, the complaint alleges.
